COSI FAN TUTTI
set in 1950's Coney Island

A winning cast comes together for Phelim McDermott’s clever vision of Mozart’s comedy about the sexes, set in a carnival-esque, funhouse environment inspired by 1950s Coney Island—complete with bearded ladies, fire eaters, and a Ferris wheel. Manipulating the action are the Don Alfonso of Christopher Maltman and the Despina of Tony Award–winner Kelli O’Hara, with Amanda Majeski, Serena Malfi, Ben Bliss, and Adam Plachetka as the pairs of young lovers who test each other’s faithfulness. David Robertson conducts.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO

If you happen to be looking forward to the April 14 LIVE HD-transmission from the Met of Verdi's "Luisa Miller," then you'll probably want to listen tomorrow evening to the LIVE audio-stream which the Met is providing as a free service to its listeners. Featuring the same cast that is scheduled to perform on April 14, the broadcast tomorrow evening of "Luisa Miller" will give you a chance to hear soprano Sonya Yoncheva in the title role, and with Piotr Beczala as her true love Rodolfo and with Placido Domingo as Miller (her father).

Then on Saturday afternoon (March 31), the Met is bringing us yet another LIVE HD-transmission that can be seen in various movie theatres. This time around it's a performance of Mozart's "Cosi fan Tutte" which can also be heard on several internet radio stations.

A rarity by Gasparo Spontini pops up on Radio 3 (RAI) as a January 2018 performance from Venice is broadcast of his opera "La Metamorfosi di Pasquale" (premiered in 1802).

Wagner enthusiasts, however, will no doubt be interested in German Radio's broadcast of "Tristan & Isolde" in a performance that took place earlier this month in Berlin.

More Wagner is on hand on Easter Sunday (April 1) with a video-stream from OperaVision of "Parsifal" as performed in Antwerp. As with other opera videos from OperaVision, this one will be available for several weeks afterwards.

From Boston's Odyssey Opera (also on Sunday), there's a broadcast of Donizetti's rarely heard "L'Assedio di Calais" on WCRB. This opera -- which, incidentally, contains some of Donizetti's most brilliant and stirring music -- was performed by this Boston company back in October 2017.

Then, if by Monday (April 2), you still haven't had your fill of opera, you can hear last Saturday's performance from Salzburg of Puccini's "Tosca."

Enjoy!

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D’AGUANNO

OperaVision has two operas available for video-streaming this week, beginning with today's performance from the Polish National Opera of Ludomir Rozycki's 1916 opera "Eros & Psyche." If you happen to be too late to catch this one from the beginning, you can always access it later on, since it will be available for viewing till some time in August.

The other offering from OperaVision is the LIVE performance from Berlin on Friday (March 23) of Offenbach's "Bluebeard." Those of you who are familiar with this composer's other zany works (such as "La Belle Helene" & "La Vie Parisienne") will know what to expect with this one.

In the meantime, tomorrow (Thursday) there are two opera performances being broadcast that are worth mentioning, one of them being the LIVE performance from Madrid of Verdi's "Aida."

Also on Thursday, the Met is offering a free LIVE audio-stream of Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" with Vittorio Grigolo in the leading tenor role of Edgardo.

As usual, the Met's Saturday matinee performance on March 24 is available for listening on several internet radio stations. The opera this week is none other than Puccini's "Turandot."

If you'd rather take in yet another Verdi opera instead, there's a performance of "Rigoletto" on Swedish Radio, direct from Malmo.

On Radio 3 (RAI) there's a LIVE performance of Beethoven's "Fidelio" -- coming to us from Naples.

For some unknown reason (unknown to me, that is), we seem to be in the midst of a Gottfried von Einem revival (of sorts). Last week, his opera "The Visit of the Old Woman" was broadcast on ORF (Austria), and this Saturday the same radio station will be broadcasting a LIVE performance from Vienna of his 1947 opera "Dantons Tod" ("Danton's Death") which also, incidentally, is available for purchase as a video.

Enjoy!
