OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO

Opera lovers can begin enjoying opera on the internet as early as tomorrow (Thursday) when Mozart's "Lucio Silla" (1772) receives a LIVE video-stream as it is being performed in Brussels.

Then on Saturday (November 11), there are several choices available, one of which is a LIVE performance from the Met of Massenet's "Thais." This one is not part of the Met's regular series of weekly Saturday matinee broadcasts, but is one of the many FREE audio-streams that are scheduled throughout the season, usually on week-days rather than Saturdays or Sundays.

Three rarities also appear on Saturday's schedule, one of which is the Wexford Festival performance of Jacopo Foroni's "Margherita" -- his first opera, written in 1848. As with several other obscure works that have popped up in recent weeks, "Margherita" is definitely one of those operas which opera lovers the world over have never heard, since this is its 1st series of performances in over 100 years.

Another rarity would be Meyerbeer's "L'Etoile du Nord" ("The North Star") which appeared in 1854 towards the end of this composer's career, and although it has been occasionally revived, it certainly can be regarded as an obscure work by a fairly well-known composer. The performance being broadcast comes to us LIVE from Helsinki.

Also on Saturday, there's another opera -- this one by a famous composer -- which doesn't get performed too often. It's Rossini's "Tancredi" (1813), and it can be heard on the Belgian station Klara in a performance that took place last month in Brussels.

There's even more opera on the internet on Sunday! One that stands out -- particularly to fans of soprano Anna Netrebko -- is the LIVE performance on ORF (Austria) from the Vienna State Opera of Cilea's most famous work "Adriana Lecouvreur." Partnering Ms Netrebko is tenor Piotr Beczala in the role of Maurizio.

Also on Sunday, Verdi's "Macbeth" can be heard on French Radio in a LIVE performance from Paris.

And -- if you're in the mood for yet another rarity -- Erich Korngold's "Das Wunder der Heliane" (1927) is sure to delight, especially those listeners who are fond of the works of Richard Strauss (for example). The performance you'll be hearing is from Freiburg (Germany).

Enjoy!

DAVE
