OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO

Opera fans who take particular delight in listening to operas from the Baroque period will probably rejoice at the prospect of having two operas from this era available on the internet on Saturday (November 4). Radio 3 (RAI) will be broadcasting a LIVE performance from Naples of Leonardo Leo's "L'Olimpiade" which premiered in 1737.

At the same time, another LIVE performance is scheduled to be broadcast on Saturday. The work in question is of even earlier vintage, being Francesco Cavalli's "Eliogabalo" (1667). It's coming to us via Radio 4 (the Netherlands) and is being performed in Amsterdam.

Moving into the 1800s, a relatively early work by Bellini -- "Il Pirata" (1827) -- can be heard on NPR. The performance is one that took place this past July 8 as part of this summer's Caramoor Festival.

Then there's a one-act opera that most of us have probably never heard. It's Helena Munktell's "I Firenze" (1889). Swedish Radio is broadcasting this performance from Stockholm.

While most of us are familiar with the name Franco Alfano by virtue of the fact that he completed "Turandot" upon Puccini's death, not everyone may have heard his own opera "Cyrano de Bergerac" which was revived at the Met a few years ago. Well, the Wexford Festival in Ireland has actually "resurrected" (if I can be forgiven the pun)  Alfano's earlier opera from 1904 -- "Risurrezione" ("Resurrection") -- which is based on the novel of the same name by Leo Tolstoy. It's on Lyric FM which last week brought us Cherubini's "Medea" and next week will be broadcasting Foroni's "Margherita."

However, on Friday of this week, the Met is bringing us all the way into the 21st century with a FREE live audio-stream of "The Exterminating Angel" by Thomas Ades which, as many of you are aware, will receive an HD-transmission in local movie theatres in just a few weeks (Nov. 18).

And to all you opera fans who were hoping to hear another broadcast of "Carmen" or "La Boheme" or "Don Giovanni" --  you may have to wait till next week! Odds are at least one of them will turn up, sooner rather than later!

Enjoy!

DAVE
