OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO

With the 2017/2018 opera season now in full swing, there's plenty of opera available to us on the internet in the coming days. Starting with a few videos, the newly launched website Opera Vision has an outstanding performance available of Debussy's "Pelleas & Melisande" (Berlin, Oct. 15, 2017), and you can access it at anytime for the next several months. Aside from the Debussy opera, this same website this Saturday will be video-streaming a performance of Wagner's "Rheingold"  (Opera North, June 2017). The remaining 3 operas of the Ring Cycle are to follow shortly.

One other video-stream of note will take place on Saturday with a LIVE performance from the Bavarian State Opera in Munich of Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro."

In the mood for some brand-new 21st century opera? There's the world premiere performance of Victoria Borisova-Ollas's opera "Dracula" on Swedish Radio. The opera (written in 2013) is being broadcast LIVE from Stockholm.

Direct from Amsterdam, you can hear a LIVE performance of Beethoven's "Leonore" which, as many of you probably know, is the original version of "Fidelio." This one can be heard on Radio 4 (the Netherlands).

If you happen to be in the mood for another performance of Bellini's "Norma" (assuming you attended the Met's HD-transmission of the work a few weeks ago), you may want to listen to the LIVE performance of the work, direct from Liege.

The first opera to be broadcast from this year's Wexford Festival in Ireland is Luigi Cherubini's 1797 version of the work (as opposed to other "Medea" operas by Pacini, Mercadante, Mayr, & Reimann, to name a few). This one can be heard LIVE on Lyric FM. Other operas to be heard in coming weeks from this same festival include Franco Alfano's "Risurrezione" & Jacopo Foroni's "Margherita." As those titles suggest, operas performed at this particular festival are usually ones that you would seldom encounter anywhere else.

On NPR, we go back 3 years for a performance of Donizetti's "Lucrezia Borgia" from the 2014 Caramoor Festival, specifically July 18 of that year.

Enjoy!

This is just crazy.....

NOOSE FOUND INSIDE MET OPERA LOCKER ROOM

A musician at the Metropolitan Opera House in Manhattan found a noose in the men’s locker room Saturday night — and cops are investigating it as a possible hate crime, sources told The Post.
The Metropolitan Opera said the noose was found by a percussionist at 30 Lincoln Center Plaza just after 7 p.m. prior to the start of Turandot.
“We immediately called the NYPD, who began their investigation with the Met’s full support and cooperation,” the statement reads.
“This is a very disturbing incident for the members of our company and, if it was a deliberate act of racial hate, we would like to find out as soon as possible to help guide our next steps.”
It is unclear who the noose was targeting. The musician who found it is white, but sources said it was being probed as an “anti-black hate crime.”
