R. Strauss’s
ELEKTRA

The genius director Patrice Chéreau (From the House of the Dead) didn’t live to see his great Elektra production, previously presented in Aix and Milan, make it to the stage of the Met. But his overpowering vision lives on with soprano Nina Stemme—unmatched today in the heroic female roles of Strauss and Wagner—who portrays Elektra’s primal quest for vengeance for the murder of her father, Agamemnon. Legendary mezzo-soprano Waltraud Meier is chilling as Elektra’s fearsome mother, Klytämnestra. Soprano Adrianne Pieczonka and bass-baritone Eric Owens are Elektra’s troubled siblings. Chéreau’s musical collaborator Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts Strauss’s mighty take on Greek myth.
Duration: 120 minutes

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO

A few of the interesting internet broadcasts coming up this Labor Day weekend include yet another performance from this summer's Salzburg Festival. This time around, it's Donizetti's "Lucrezia Borgia" as performed earlier this month and featuring tenor Juan Diego Florez as Gennaro and bass Ildar Abdrazakov as Don Alfonso. Soprano Krassimira Stoyanova, who has sung Aida and Violetta (among other roles) at the Met, takes on the demanding title role.

For something that you've probably never heard before, you can tune in to Swedish Radio for an October 30, 2016 performance from Goteborg of Ivar Hallstrom's 1877 opera "The Vikings."

There's also a special treat, courtesy of NPR, for fans of tenor Luciano Pavarotti, as a September 1979 performance from San Francisco of Ponchielli's "La Gioconda" is being broadcast with the legendary tenor himself in the role of Enzo. Also included in the cast is soprano Renata Scotto, whose exciting performances throughout major opera houses have been treasured by her many admirers.

And for those of you who simply can't get enough of Puccini's "Tosca" you can watch a video of this enormously popular work on the Opera Platform on Sunday (Sept. 3). It's a new production that was staged in Oslo this past June, and it should be available for viewing for several weeks afterwards.

Enjoy!

DAVE
