OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
Here
we are in the 21st century, and opera composers are still finding inspiration
in the works of Shakespeare, as did Giuseppe Verdi, Ambroise Thomas, and a few
others in the 19th century. Just as Ryan Wigglesworth gave us a new operatic
version of "A Winter's Tale" earlier this year, Australian composer
Brett Dean has now joined in with his own version of "Hamlet" which
is being performed this summer in Glyndebourne. Tomorrow (July 6), you can
watch a LIVE performance of this brand-new opera at the link below.
Another
LIVE opera video will be available on Sunday (July 9), as the Bavarian State
Opera (Munich) will be performing Wagner's "Tannhauser."
If
you missed last week's video-stream of Schreker's "The Stigmatized"
(also from Munich), you may want to listen to the audio version of that
performance, which can be accessed on Saturday on ORF (Austria).
Yet
another new opera is on hand, as Radio 3 (RAI) brings us the December 2, 2016
performance of Marco Betta's "Notte per me Luminosa." This one took
place in Modena, Italy.
The
"other" Radio 3 (BBC) has scheduled a London Royal Opera House
performance from July 1 of Mozart's "Mitradate, Re di Ponto" which
was written when the composer had attained the ripe old age of 14 !!!
Also,
on NPR, as part of their continuing series of broadcasts from Lyric Opera of
Chicago's 2016/2017 season, it's Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" with
well-known baritone Mariusz Kwiecien singing the title role in this March 2017
performance.
Enjoy!
DAVE
