OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO

In the next coming days, two of Rossini's serious operas can be heard on internet radio, beginning with tomorrow's LIVE performance from this summer's Bregenz Festival of his "Mose in Egitto" (premiered in 1818). This one can be heard on ORF (Austria).

Then on Saturday, German Radio will be bringing us a delayed broadcast from Bad Wildbad of "Maometto II" in its original 1820 version. Interestingly enough, this one was later revised by Rossini himself and became "The Siege of Corinth" when performed in Paris, whereas the aforementioned "Mose in Egitto" later became "Moise & Pharaon." In any case, while many musicians (conductor Riccardo Muti, for one) prefer the later French-language revisions, there are those who prefer the earlier versions, i.e. those being performed and broadcast this week.

Radio 3 (RAI) has two operas coming up, the first of these being on Saturday with a LIVE broadcast from Munich of Weber's final opera "Oberon." Despite the rather misleading title (since the plot here has nothing to do with the goings-on in Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream"), the music of this opera contains some of Weber's finest, and fans of this work will, no doubt, be looking forward to the upcoming video-stream on July 30 with the same cast.

The other offering on RAI will take place on Tuesday (July 25), as the series of broadcasts from this summer's Bayreuth Festival is launched with a performance of Wagner's "Die Meistersinger."

More Wagner is on tap when, on Saturday, NPR brings us a February 2015 performance from Lyric Opera of Chicago of "Tannhauser." The (relatively) recently deceased tenor Johan Botha takes on the title role, as he did many times in his illustrious career.

And for those of you who may relish the prospect of hearing an opera by Umberto Giordano which is NOT either "Andrea Chenier" or "Fedora," you'll get your chance on Saturday when French Radio broadcasts a LIVE performance from Montpellier of this composer's 1903 opera "Siberia" which, interestingly enough, was highly praised by composer Gabriel Faure during the time of its early performances.

Enjoy!

DAVE
