OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
This Saturday
afternoon (May 6), the Met's matinee broadcast will be of Franco Alfano's
"Cyrano de Bergerac" with a starry cast including tenor Roberto
Alagna in the title role and soprano Patricia Racette as Roxanne. As usual,
this Met broadcast can be heard on several internet radio stations.
Those with a
taste for more "modern" repertory will rejoice at the prospect of
having several choices available to them this weekend, one of which is the LIVE
broadcast on Radio 4 (the Netherlands) of Alexander Raskatov's "A Dog's
Heart" (2009). This one comes to us, direct from Amsterdam.
On German
Radio, it's Hans Gal's 1925 opera "Das Lied der Nacht" as performed
just last Saturday (April 29) in Osnabruck.
Or how about a
so-called space opera? Karl-Birger Blomdahl's "Aniara" (premiered in
1959) has been described by the composer himself as "a revue about Man in
Time and Space." You can hear this one on Swedish Radio in a LIVE
performance from Malmo.
Another
intriguing prospect is available on Friday (May 5), with a video from Madrid of
Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera's "Bomarzo" which was first
performed here in the U.S. (1967) but was banned in Argentina till 1972. This
one can be seen on The Opera Platform and should be available for free viewing
for the next several weeks.
As a
side-note, I should point out that, on Friday, The Opera Platform is also
premiering videos of Bizet's "Carmen" and Mozart's "The Magic Flute.")
Also, on
Friday, from Radio 3 (RAI), more traditional-minded opera fans can listen to a
LIVE performance from Florence of Verdi's "Don Carlo."
Enjoy!
DAVE
