OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO
Opera-lovers
who may be interested in getting acquainted with the latest opera by Thomas
Ades -- "The Exterminating Angel" -- have a chance this coming
Saturday afternoon (May 20) to do just that when last summer's premiere of the
work in Salzburg is re-broadcast on Swedish Radio. Now that we know that this
opera will be performed at the Met next season, and will also receive an
HD-transmission, there will probably be an increased amount of interest in the
work. Also, those of us who saw his earlier opera "The Tempest" in HD
a few years ago will have a general idea of what to expect (to some extent).
Also
of interest, particularly to those with a liking for brand-new 21st century
works: BBC Radio 3 will be broadcasting an English National Opera performance
of Ryan Wigglesworth's new opera "A Winter's Tale" -- yet another
adaptation of one of Shakespeare's many plays. Wigglesworth's opera premiered
on February 27, 2017, and the performance being broadcast stems from the series
of performances that ensued in London at that time.
Then
there's Alban Berg's 20th century masterpiece "Lulu" which, by now,
seems to be firmly established in the repertory of many opera companies. A
recent performance of this opera (Hamburg, February 12, 2017) is being
broadcast on German Radio.
For
opera lovers with more conservative tastes, Giordano's most popular work --
"Andrea Chenier" -- can be heard on Radio 3 (RAI) in a performance
that took place in Rome just last month (April 21).
And
for those of us who enjoy the music of Handel, his opera "Rodelinda"
is guaranteed to entertain. Interested listeners should check out the recent
performance from Madrid that took place in March. It's on Radio 4 (the
Netherlands).

Enjoy!
