Rusalka

Kristine Opolais “gives a vocally lustrous and achingly vulnerable performance” (New York Times) in the role that helped launch her international career, the mythical Rusalka, who sings the haunting “Song to the Moon.” Director Mary Zimmerman brings her wondrous theatrical imagination to Dvořák’s fairytale of love and longing, rejection and redemption, giving the work “an inspired staging” (Huffington Post). Brandon Jovanovich, Jamie Barton, Katarina Dalayman, and Eric Owens complete “a matchless cast” (New York Times), and Sir Mark Elder conducts “a magnificent rendering of the composer’s lush score (Huffington Post).

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE D' AGUANNO

If you've been interested in attending any of the various Met HD-transmissions that are shown at area movie theatres, you'll probably already know about the upcoming transmission this Saturday (February 25) of Dvorak's "Rusalka." Not so long ago, soprano Renee Fleming was seen & heard in this same opera; this time around it's soprano Kristine Opolais who will be featured in the title role.
(audio only: www.wrti.org/)

Bass Ildar Abdrazakov has also been featured in a few Met HD-transmissions, singing the title role (for instance) in Borodin's "Prince Igor." On Saturday, he can be heard in this same role, as performed in Amsterdam earlier this month. This one is being broadcast on Radio 4 (the Netherlands).

If you're a fan of classical orchestral music, you're probably fairly familiar with the incidental music which Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg composed for Henrik Ibsen's play "Peer Gynt." Many of you may not realize that composer Werner Egk actually wrote an OPERA of the same name & based, as well, on Ibsen's play. His "Peer Gynt" (1938) can be heard this Saturday in a LIVE performance from Vienna.

Two other opera performances are also worth noting. One of them is the FREE live audio-stream on Friday evening (7:25 p.m.) of Verdi's "La Traviata" direct from the Met with soprano Sonya Yoncheva singing the role of Violetta. This young soprano will be performing the same role in the upcoming HD-transmission of the work on March 11.

Then on Sunday afternoon, it's the FREE live video-stream from Munich of Rossini's "Semiramide" with Joyce DiDonato in the title role. Since performances of this Rossini opera are not exactly abundant -- and since, as many of you already know, Ms DiDonato is an extraordinarily gifted singer -- this one (IMO) is not to be missed!

Enjoy!

DAVE
