OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
 DAVE D' AGUANNO

With the year 2017 winding down, a couple of opera's more "celebratory" works can be enjoyed on the internet in the days ahead. Why not start with a video of "Die Fledermaus" by Johann Strauss? This is actually a performance that took place a year ago (December 2016) in Marseilles and may be considered, in some respects, "Fledermaus"-French style, with the names of some of the characters changed, and with French subtitles provided during the sung portions of the score (but not the dialogue). In any case, it's a splendid performance which, of course, cannot disguise the characteristically Viennese flavor of so much of the music!

The Met also jumps on the band-wagon with a LIVE broadcast on Saturday of Franz Lehar's "Merry Widow" featuring Susan Graham as Hanna Glawari.

German Radio, on the other hand, has a special treat in store for lovers of Mozart's "Don Giovanni" and those same opera-lovers of a certain age who may have adored the talents of certain opera singers from back in the 50s & 60s. It's an archival performance from Berlin, September 24, 1961, of Mozart's masterpiece with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Pilar Lorengar, Elisabeth Grummer, and others who were at their considerable peak back in that time period.

There are also a couple of re-broadcasts worth mentioning on Saturday's schedule. One of them is the recent (October 24) performance of Verdi's "Un Ballo in Maschera" from Barcelona, with  Piotr Beczala in the leading tenor role.

Or you can tune in to Swedish Radio for the April 12, 2017 performance from Geneva of Tchaikovsky's "Maid of Orleans" which will certainly appeal to those opera fans who enjoy this composer's far more popular "Eugene Onegin."

Then on New Year's Eve itself, the Met offers us a free LIVE audio-stream of Puccini's "Tosca" with Sonya Yoncheva, Vittorio Grigolo, and Zeljko Lucic in the main roles.

Enjoy! -- Happy New Year to you all!

 OPERA ON THE INTERNET
 WITH
 DAVE D' AGUANNO

With several internet radio stations programming performances of Handel's "Messiah" during the next several days, actual opera broadcasts are at a minimum; however, there are still some highly attractive offerings scheduled for the delight of most opera fans. One of these would be the free LIVE video-stream from Munich of Puccini's "Il Trittico." The 3 operas that this work is comprised of -- "Il Tabarro" - "Suor Angelica" - "Gianni Schicchi" -- will be performed on Saturday afternoon.

At the same time, the Met will be broadcasting a LIVE performance of Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro" which can be heard on several internet radio stations.

To complicate matters, in deciding whether to go with Puccini from Munich or Mozart from New York, there's the December 3 performance of Meyerbeer's grand opera "Le Prophete" (1849) which is scheduled to be broadcast on German Radio. The performance in question took place in Berlin which, in recent years, has also staged Meyerbeer's "Le Huguenots."

Aside from the above-mentioned December 23 offerings, there's a LIVE broadcast from Genoa scheduled on Friday (Dec. 22), the opera in question being Verdi's "Rigoletto" with baritone Leo Nucci in the title role. Yes, that's Leo Nucci who's been singing on the operatic stages since the 1970s and has reportedly sung the role of Rigoletto over 400 times!

Then, as a post-Christmas treat, the Met is broadcasting a LIVE performance on Tuesday (the 26th) at 7:25 pm of Humperdinck's "Hansel & Gretel" as part of their series of FREE live audio-streams.

Enjoy! -- And Happy Holidays to you all!

Simonetta Puccini has died. She was, it seems, the last surviving direct heir to the composer. She was the daughter of his son Antonio. She was in some ways a difficult person but balanced that with a genuine love and devotion to the works of her grandfather, whom she never met. He died in 1924 and she was born in 1929.

REGARDING JAMES LEVINE

The musical world continues to be roiled by the allegations against Maestro James Levine, which he has denied. At the moment, he is suspended from the Met while the Met awaits the results of the investigation that is being conducted by an outside evaluator.  I will include links to articles about this issue but I will make no further comment.
