OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

This coming Saturday afternoon (Dec. 3), the first radio broadcast from the Met's 2016/2017 season can be heard on several internet radio stations. The opera being broadcast is none other than Puccini's "Manon Lescaut" with soprano Anna Netrebko singing the title role, and with tenor Marcelo Alvarez as Des Grieux.

In addition to Saturday's broadcast of the Puccini opera, the Met is offering another of their FREE live audio-streams this week. Tomorrow evening (Thursday) at 7:25, it's Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho's opera "L'Amour de Loin" which premiered in 2000. This opera will also be available for our viewing & listening pleasure on Saturday, December 10, in yet another of the Met's splendid HD-transmissions.

Another modern opera worth mentioning is "El Juez" ("The Judge") by Christian Kolonovits. Having received its world premiere in 2014, this opera was recently performed in Vienna (July 2, 2016), & it is this performance which can be heard on Saturday on ORF (Austria). What makes this broadcast of special interest will undoubtedly be the performance of the title role by the acclaimed tenor Jose Carreras! This fabulous tenor hadn't been heard in opera since 2002, so this current broadcast marks something of a "return performance" for Mr. Carreras.

On the Belgian station Klara, a performance from earlier this month of "Capriccio" -- the final completed opera of Richard Strauss -- appears on the schedule. This production from Brussels can also be SEEN (check the video link below).

Another video can be viewed on Saturday; however, the opera being shown is by a different Strauss composer. Oscar Straus (no relation to either Richard or Johann) dropped the 2nd "s" from his last name in order to avoid confusion with the other more famous composers. In fact, stylistically he's a lot closer to Johann. (Does anyone remember "The Chocolate Soldier" also by this composer?) So, on Saturday, on The Opera Platform as well as Arte-TV, in a performance from Berlin, it's his 1923 operetta "The Pearls of Cleopatra."

Then on Sunday, the Bavarian State Opera (Munich) has a LIVE video-stream of Shostakovich's "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" which should be available with English subtitles provided.

Enjoy!

Cosi Fan Tutte

Wednesday November 30th   12:30pm

Mozart's glorious comedy Così Fan Tutte
This operatic jewel offers a glittering take on the nature of love in this brand new production by Director Jan Philipp Gloger. Based on a theme of 'fiancée swapping' which dates back to the 13th Century, Mozart's opera follows the story of two engaged couples who are thrown into a whirl as the men try to win the hearts of the other's fiancée to win a bet. But the initial fun provokes serious consequences as this 'school for lovers' teaches some hard lessons.

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

This evening, at 7:25, the Met is offering a FREE live audio-stream of the ever-popular "La Boheme" (Puccini), featuring soprano Kristine Opolais as Mimi and tenor Piotr Beczala as Rodolfo.

Then on Saturday (November 26), various operas (both popular and fairly obscure) can be heard on internet radio. Pride of place for many listeners would probably be the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra performance of Beethoven's "Fidelio" with soprano Nina Stemme as Leonore. Those of you who may have seen her as Isolde in the recent HD-transmission of Wagner's "Tristan & Isolde" will, no doubt, be familiar with this singer's considerable strengths.

If you happen to be in the mood for yet one more performance of Bizet's "Carmen," then you might want to check out Swedish Radio which will be broadcasting Friday night's performance of the work, direct from Goteborg.

On Radio 4 (the Netherlands), Prokofiev's "Semyon Kotko" (written during the summer months of 1938 & 1939) can be heard in a LIVE performance from Amsterdam.

Also from the 20th century, Benjamin Britten's "Billy Budd" was recently performed in Leeds (Opera North), and one of those October 2016 performances can be heard on BBC Radio 3.

Wagner enthusiasts needn't feel left out, as German Radio gives us another chance to hear the July 29, 2016 broadcast of "Siegfried" as performed during last summer's Bayreuth Festival.

Then, on Sunday, if your appetite for Wagner still isn't satisfied, Radio 3 (RAI) will be broadcasting a LIVE performance from Rome of "Tristan & Isolde."

Lots of opera on hand, while you're busy "recuperating" from a huge & delicious Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday!

Enjoy!
