GREAT PERFORMANCES AT THE MET

 MACBETH

Star soprano Anna Netrebko delivers her searing portrayal of Lady Macbeth, the mad and murderous mate of Zeljko Lucic's doomed Macbeth, for the first time at the Met. Adrian Noble's chilling production of Verdi's masterful adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy also stars Joseph Calleja as the noble Macduff and Rene Pape as Banquo. Fabio Luisi conducts.

The Transgender Opera Singer:
from Mezzo to Tenor

September 16, 2016 by theoperastage
Exclusive Guest Blog post for The Opera Stage by tenor Holden Madagame.

I’m an FTM (female to male) transgender classical singer. You have probably not met one of me before. I’ve been on testosterone about two years, use he/him/his pronouns, have had top-surgery (a double mastectomy), and have still continued to sing.

Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky has cancelled several upcoming commitments due to additional, needed chemo.  (One year ago, he was treated for a brain tumor.) Please keep him and his family in your thoughts and hearts.

Tenor Stuart Skelton, as many of you probably already know, sang in the opening night performance at the Met of Wagner's "Tristan & Isolde" this pastMonday evening, and will also appear as Tristan in next month's LIVE HD-transmission. In case you may want to hear him sing this role in a different production and with a different supporting cast, you can tune in to BBC Radio 3on Saturday for a broadcast of this opera from English National Opera (July 2016).   (www.bbc.co.uk/radio3)

Also from this past July, there's a performance from Madrid of Bellini's "I Puritani" on ORF (Austria). This one features soprano Diana Damrau as Elvira. FYI, if you prefer, I've included a link below to a YouTube video of this same performance in the event that you wish to watch it as well.
(audio only: http://oe1.orf.at/)

Fans of the music of John Adams can listen to a LIVE performance of his 1986 opera "Nixon in China" which is being broadcast on Swedish Radio. The performance itself comes to us from Stockholm.

Another 20th century opera -- Francis Poulenc's "Dialogues of the Carmelites" -- is on NPR's schedule. It's a performance from the San Francisco Opera, NOT from the 2015/2016 season, but an archival broadcast from 1982. Of particular interest would be a chance to hear soprano Leontyne Price as Madame Lidoine, plus Regine Crespin as Madame de Croissy.

The next FREE live audio-stream from the Met will take place on Tuesday(October 4) at 7:25 pm. The opera: Rossini's "L'Italiana in Algeri" with bass Ildar Abdrazakov in the comic role of Mustafa.

Enjoy!

Opera fans who adored the singers who were active at the Met in the 50s & 60s will probably want to tune in to NPR which this Saturday (September 24) will be broadcasting a 1956 Met performance of Puccini's "La Boheme." The star-studded cast for this one includes Victoria De Los Angeles as Mimi, Jussi Bjoerling as Rodolfo, Robert Merrill as Marcello, & Lucine Amara as Musetta. Wow!

Other broadcasts scheduled for this Saturday include a LIVE performance from Goteborg of Mozart's "Idomeneo" which can be heard on Swedish Radio and which can be accessed for at least a week afterwards, should you miss listening to it on Saturday.

Radio 4 (the Netherlands) will be airing the recent (September 10) performance of "Ariadne auf Naxos" by Richard Strauss. This one is a Reisopera production.

Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva -- who sang the role of Desdemona in last year's Met HD-transmission of Verdi's "Otello" & will be seen & heard later this season as Violetta in "La Traviata" -- performed the title role in Mascagni's "Iris" on July 26. In case you missed it when it was broadcast back then, ORF (Austria) has it scheduled for this Saturday.

Then on Monday (September 26) at 4:55 pm, it's the first FREE live audio-stream from the Met, & (as expected) it's Wagner's "Tristan & Isolde" with Stuart Skelton & Nina Stemme in the two leading roles which they will be performing in next month's HD-transmission as well.

And then on Tuesday (the 27th), Radio 3 (RAI) is broadcasting a LIVE performance from Florence of Rossini's "Semiramide."

As far as video performances are concerned, Verdi enthusiasts may find it hard to resist watching this coming Saturday's performance from Madrid of Verdi's "Otello" on The Opera Platform. (Upcoming video presentation on this website include Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro" on September 27 as well as Schreker's "The Stigmatized" on October 7.)

As you probably already know, the Met has scheduled a LIVE HD-transmission on Saturday, October 8, of Wagner's "Tristan & Isolde" with soprano Nina Stemme as Isolde.

To complicate matters for those of us who are Wagner enthusiasts, the Bavarian State Opera has scheduled their free LIVE video-stream on their website of "Die Meistersinger" (with Jonas Kaufmann as Walther) on the same day & (basically) the same time. This is the one that was originally supposed to have taken place in July but was re-scheduled.

The only saving grace I can think of is that the "Meistersinger" video MIGHT be available for viewing for a few days after the October 8 live video-stream, as has sometimes been the case with previous videos from Munich.

Also, the schedule for further upcoming video-streams from the 2016/2017 season in Munich is supposed to be announced before the end of this month.

Enjoy!
