The Importance of Being Earnest
Lincoln Center, New York City
June 2–4
All of my Irish opera friends have raved about composer-librettist Gerald Barry’s adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s comedy. Although the opera received a concert performance in Los Angeles in 2011, Ramin Gray’s full production from London’s Royal Opera will have its U.S. premiere at the Rose Theater as part of the Lincoln Center–New York Philharmonic Opera Initiative.
It is preferable to see it live, but you might also watch this video of the opera by the Royal Opera House (which begins at 12:40)

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

National Public Radio (NPR) has now begun its series of broadcasts of performances from the 2015/2016 season at Lyric Opera of Chicago. This coming Saturday (May 28) it's Rossini's take on the familiar Cinderella story -- "La Cenerentola" -- in a performance that took place in Chicago last October.

More Italian opera comes to us via French Radio with a broadcast of the April 23, 2016 performance from Paris of Verdi's "Rigoletto" a video of which should be forthcoming, either on YouTube or as an officially released DVD. In the meantime, you can enjoy this video excerpt with soprano Olga Peretyatko (Gilda) and tenor Michael Fabiano (the Duke) as they perform a portion of their Act 2 duet in this afore-mentioned production: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdC7UrdlLJI
(audio of complete opera: www.francemusique.fr/)

20th century opera is on tap for us on BBC Radio 3 with a performance that took place last December in Vienna, the opera being Britten's "Peter Grimes."

Even more 20th century opera appears on Saturday's internet radio schedule with a LIVE performance from Turin of Hans Werner Henze's "Pollicino" (1980) which has been described as a "fairy tale for music." This one can be heard on RAI (Italy).

Enjoy!

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

A mix of the familiar and the unfamiliar characterizes the offerings on internet radio for this coming Saturday (May 21). For example, most opera fans are familiar with Gounod's "Romeo & Juliette." Few, however, have ever heard Vaccai's "Romeo & Giulietta" or Zandonai's "Giulietta & Romeo." Well, on Saturday, it's "Giulietta & Romeo" by composer Nicola Antonio Zingarelli, an opera which he composed in just 8 days and which premiered in January 1796. ORF (Austria) is broadcasting a performance of the work that took place in Salzburg last Saturday (May 14).

Another rarely performed work that can be heard on Saturday is Jacopo Foroni's "Cristina, Regina di Svezia." Written in 1849, this one can be heard on German Radio in a LIVE performance from Oldenburg.

On a far more familiar note, there's a LIVE performance from Amsterdam of Mozart's "Don Giovanni" that can be heard on Radio 4 (the Netherlands).

Bellini's "La Sonnambula" is scheduled on French Radio in a (concert) performance that took place in Paris on April 11 of this year.

Radio 3 (RAI) has the March 15, 2016 performance of Rossini's "L'Italiana in Algeri" scheduled for Saturday. This one took place in Florence.

In the midst of all these broadcasts of Italian operas, Wagner enthusiasts can still find one of his operas on the schedule as BBC Radio 3 broadcasts a recent performance of "Tannhauser" from the Royal Opera House in London.

Enjoy!
