OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

The first Saturday of the New Year brings us what will probably be a high-spirited LIVE broadcast from the Met of "Die Fledermaus" by Johann Strauss.

Also LIVE -- but from London's Royal Opera House (Covent Garden) -- is a performance of Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" with baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky in the title role.

If the 2 operas listed above are simply not long enough to satisfy one's operatic taste, even though there's no Wagner on hand this weekend, there's always Rossini's grand opera "William Tell" to fill the bill. The performance being broadcast took place in Geneva on September 21 of this year.

On December 21, a performance of "The Damnation of Faust" by Hector Berlioz took place in Paris with tenor Jonas Kaufmann singing the title role. One can hear the performance on French Radio this Saturday. On the other hand, one can also watch it (see the YouTube link below), provided one can somehow grasp the concept of Faust embarking upon a mission to Mars !! (I kid you not.)

And for those of you who'd rather spend New Year's Eve listening to a good opera rather than being out-and-about, the Met is offering a FREE live audio-stream tomorrow evening at 6:55 of Bizet's "The Pearl Fishers."

Enjoy! -- And have a safe & wonderful New Year !!!

DAVE

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

A big weekend for fans of Humperdinck's opera "Hansel & Gretel" with 3 separate broadcast performances scheduled for this coming Saturday (December 26) !!

In order of performance date, German Radio is broadcasting the Vienna State Opera's performance of the work which took place this past November 19.

On Radio 4 (the Netherlands), there's last Tuesday's performance from Amsterdam.

The most recent one (from last Thursday) comes to us via French Radio, as performed in Nantes.

In keeping with the holiday spirit, Swedish Radio is airing a performance that actually took place in Moscow on March 11, 2014, the opera being Rimsky-Korsakov's "Christmas Eve."

The LIVE Met broadcast this Saturday is none other than perhaps Rossini's most popular work: "The Barber of Seville."

In fact, the Met is also broadcasting a FREE live audio-stream TONIGHT of Johann Strauss's most popular operetta: "Die Fledermaus."

If all of the above operas do little to excite more "tragically-oriented" opera-lovers (although the Witch DOES die in "Hansel & Gretel"), there's always a bit of Verdi on hand to provide more than a dash of tragedy. In this case, it's "La Forza del Destino" -- or more specifically, "The Force of Destiny" as performed last month in English at London's Coliseum (English National Opera).

Despite the comic delights of "L'Elisir d'Amore" & "Don Pasquale," Donizetti also wrote his share of tragic operas, one of which -- "Roberto Devereux" -- can be heard on Radio 3 (RAI) in the September 1, 2015 performance from Madrid. It may also be SEEN if you wish to access the YouTube video which someone generously uploaded a while ago (with Spanish subtitles).
(audio only: www.radio3.rai.it/)

Enjoy -- & Happy Holidays to you all !!!

DAVE
