This coming Saturday (May 31), several
radio stations on the internet are providing listeners with an opportunity to
listen once again to the Met's performance of Rossini's "Cenerentola"
that was transmitted in HD on May 10. However, Rossini enthusiasts might
choose, instead, to tune into French Radio to listen to his earlier opera
"Tancredi." The performance of this work that is being broadcast is
the one that took place last night (May 27) in Paris.
From NPR, we have Wagner's "Parsifal" as
part of its continuing series of broadcasts from Lyric Opera of Chicago's
2013/2014 season. The performance in question took place in Chicago in
November 2013.
Moving ahead into the 20th century, Benjamin Britten's
"The Turn of the Screw" (based on the chilling tale by Henry James)
can be heard on RAI (Italy) in a performance from Bologna (11/19/13).
Zimmermann's "Die Soldaten" appears on the
schedule of German Radio. It's last Sunday's performance from Munich that has,
incidentally, received excellent reviews, although potential listeners should
be aware of the fact that Zimmermann's musical style is certainly nothing like
that of Verdi or Mozart!

A Singers tradition returns: This is your chance to sing through Carl Orff’s classic score, with boozy tavern scenes and two trips on Fortune’s wheel — that infernal contraption on which hopes rise and fall and kings or queens can become paupers.
Bring a score if you have one; we’ll have some to lend. Explore the score now; the Singers will perform Carmina with the Rhode Island Philharmonic in May 2015. Christine Noel conducts Orff’s own version for two pianos.
