OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO
There's an interesting array of diverse operas on the schedule for this coming Saturday (November 30) on internet radio, with the offering being presented on German Radio easily earning the title of Obscure Opera of the Week: It's "Schahrazade" (1917) by Bernhard Sekles, and it's being broadcast LIVE from Halle. Those opera-lovers who may be interested in checking out this opera had better do it this Saturday, as I have a sneaking suspicion that you won't be seeing it as an HD-transmission from the Met any time soon (although I COULD be wrong, I suppose).
More German operas can be heard as well, one of them being what many people consider to be a 20th century masterpiece: Alban Berg's "Wozzeck" as performed recently in London (the Royal Opera House), with an impressive cast, to be sure, with baritone Simon Keenlyside singing the title role and soprano Karita Mattila as Marie. (This one will be broadcast on Monday afternoon, Dec. 2.)
Wagner's "Die Gotterdammerung" also gets broadcast this weekend. It's on Radio 4 (the Netherlands), and is a LIVE performance from Amsterdam.
If "Die Gotterdammerung" doesn't happen to be one of your favorite Wagner operas, you could listen in to this week's offering on NPR, as an April 2013 performance from Houston Grand Opera is broadcast, the opera in question being "Tristan & Isolde." The soprano in that performance is Nina Stemme.
Nina Stemme may also be heard in a LIVE performance of "Salome" (by Richard Strauss), via Swedish Radio, direct from Stockholm.
One more LIVE performance this Saturday worth mentioning is the one featured on ORF's schedule: Mozart's "The Magic Flute," as performed by the Vienna State Opera.
"Die Frau ohne Schatten" can be seen LIVE from Munich on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 1). English subtitles are usually available for the video-streams from Munich.

Enjoy!

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

Since British composer Benjamin Britten was born 100 years ago (November 22, 1913), it should come as no surprise that the opera schedule for this coming Saturday (November 23) is dominated by his works. Perhaps one of his most popular and most successful -- "Peter Grimes" (1945) -- is featured on ORF (Austria) in a LIVE performance being given by the Vienna State Opera.
The less frequently performed "Gloriana" (from 1953) can be heard on Swedish Radio in a performance that took place on June 29, 2013, at London's Royal Opera House.
Another of his serious works that has received quite a bit of attention since its premiere back in 1951 -- "Billy Budd" -- can also be heard, the performance being broadcast having originally taken place in Royal Albert Hall this past August 26.
And -- in a definitely lighter vein -- the comedy "Albert Herring" (from 1947) is being performed LIVE from the Barbican and appears on the schedule of BBC Radio 3.
Well! -- Just in case you were beginning to wonder if non-Britten fanciers were to be given a chance to listen to something more in tune with their particular musical tastes, German Radio has scheduled a LIVE performance from Potsdam of Handel's 1752 work "Jephtha." Although technically it should be considered an oratorio rather than an opera in the strict sense of the term, it's surely a noteworthy change-of-pace offering for opera fans this weekend.
But why restrict yourself to merely weekend opera listening? Thanks to the Met's generosity in providing listeners with FREE live audio-streams, there are 2 Richard Strauss operas on tap for us this coming week. On Friday evening (November 22) at 6:55 pm, it's the premiere performance this season of "Der Rosenkavalier" with mezzo-soprano Alice Coote in the title role. Then on Tuesday (November 26) at 7:25 pm, there's an additional performance of "Die Frau ohne Schatten" which has been receiving rave reviews as of late.
Enjoy!

DAVE
