OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO
Many opera stations on the internet will be broadcasting the LIVE performance from the Met this Saturday (December 28) of Puccini's "Tosca" which features baritone George Gagnidze as Scarpia, the only leading cast member who appeared in the HD-transmission of this opera earlier this season. For this Saturday's radio broadcast, soprano Sondra Radvanovsky takes over the title role, with tenor Marcello Giordani as Cavaradossi.

With the year 2013 winding down (100 years after the birth of British composer Benjamin Britten), there are still a couple of Britten operas on the schedule, one of them being possibly his most popular opera -- "Peter Grimes" -- which is being broadcast on Radio 4 (the Netherlands). The performance in question took place at the Vienna State Opera on November 23 of this year.

One month earlier (October 2013), the opera company in Glyndebourne performed Britten's slightly later opera "The Rape of Lucretia" which BBC Radio 3 is carrying on Saturday.

Going all the way back to the year 1709, there's Handel's 3-act opera "Agrippina" which can be heard on French Radio in a performance from Barcelona which took place on November 18 of this year.

Two comic operas also turn up for your listening pleasure, one of them being Donizetti's "Don Pasquale" which ORF (Austria) is airing, the performance itself being one that took place in Chicago back in November of 2012.

Last but not least, there's the New Year's Eve LIVE broadcast from the Met of a Johann Strauss favorite -- "Die Fledermaus" -- as part of its schedule of free audio-streams. Why not tune in and usher in the New Year with some gloriously melodic and upbeat music, LIVE from the Met?

Enjoy !! --Happy New Year, one and all !!!

SILENT NIGHT

8:00pm, Saturday, December 21st
This opera recounts the true story of the World War I Christmas Eve truce. For one magical evening on December 24, 1914, French, German and British soldiers laid down their arms and joined in a spontaneous celebration reflecting the peace, fellowship and humanity of the season. Based on the Academy Award-nominated film Joyeux Noel, this two-act production was commissioned by the Minnesota Opera and premiered in November 2012 to national acclaim, including a Pulitzer Prize for Music for composer Kevin Puts. With a libretto by Mark Campbell, "Silent Night" is sung in French, English, German, Italian and Latin with English subtitles.
The opera "Silent Night"  is available for viewing until Dec. 27, here:

OPERA ON THE INTERNET
WITH
DAVE  D' AGUANNO

This coming Saturday (December 21), instead of broadcasting a live performance, the Met has scheduled a performance from this past fall, the opera being Britten's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." The decision was made probably due to the fact that this particular opera wasn't scheduled for a regular live performance during the Met's usual radio broadcast season. In any case, it's certainly worth tuning in to, especially if you happen to be a major Benjamin Britten fan.

The Met is also offering a LIVE broadcast on Monday evening (December 23) at 7:25, which can be accessed in their FREE audio-stream (link below). It's Puccini's "Tosca" with two singers in the leads who didn't appear in the recent HD-transmission of this opera. Soprano Sondra Radvanovsky will be singing the role of Tosca, with tenor Marcello Giordani as Cavaradossi.

In other "news" -- French Radio is airing a performance of Poulenc's 20th-century masterpiece "The Dialogues of the Carmelites" (as performed earlier this month in Paris).

A French opera of earlier vintage than the Poulenc work comes to us via the Belgian station Klara, which will be broadcasting "Hamlet" by Ambroise Thomas, direct from Brussels. (A video of this production should become available for FREE viewing on the opera company's website within the next few weeks.)

Enjoy!
