OPERA ON THE INTERNET

WITH

DAVE  D' AGUANNO

It's a case of "a little bit of this & a little bit of that" this coming Saturday (May 26) on internet radio, with BBC Radio 3 leading the way with one of our all-time favorites: Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro" as heard this past February at London's Royal Opera House.

A bit of Handel comes to us via Radio 4 (the Netherlands) as a performance of "Orlando" is being broadcast, the performance itself originating in Brussels (April 24).

For this week's installment of broadcasts from Lyric Opera of Chicago, there's Mussorgsky's "Boris Godunov" with Ferruccio Furlanetto singing the title role. Some of you may remember his fantastic performance as King Philip in the Met's HD-transmission of Verdi's "Don Carlo" some time ago.

Then, what weekend on internet radio could possibly get past us without at least one obscure opera being broadcast? And guess what: This Saturday, we get TWO obscure operas in a double-bill from Berlin. (Please try to contain your enthusiasm, folks!) The first is a one-act opera by the eminent conductor of the past -- Felix Weingartner -- who was (obviously) also a composer, & so we get to hear his 1920 opera "Die Dorfschule" ("The Village School"), following which we're treated to the World Premiere (97 years too late!) of Carl Orff's "Gisei -- the Victim." And if the name Carl Orff rings a bell at all, it's probably due to the comparative popularity of his cantata "Carmina Burana."

Enjoy! -- & Have a safe & happy Memorial Day weekend!

DAVE
