OPERA ON THE INTERNET WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO

This Thursday evening at 8 o'clock, the Metropolitan Opera in New York is generously making available a free LIVE audio stream of Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra" -- headed by Dimitri Hvorostovsky who superbly portrayed Eugene Onegin opposite Renee Fleming a few years back in a Met HD-transmission. Simply go to www.metopera.org, click on "Watch & Listen", & then click on the Met Player at the time of the performance.

There's even more free LIVE opera from the Met (& more Verdi, too) this Saturday, Jan.22, at 1 p.m. when you can listen to "Rigoletto" which can be accessed over many internet radio stations, WRTI being only one example. The cast includes tenor Joseph Calleja who was last season's Hoffmann in Offenbach's masterwork, & who is scheduled to sing opposite Natalie Dessay in the upcoming Met HD-transmission of Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" later this season.

Another LIVE broadcast can be heard on ORF, which will be airing the Vienna State Opera's current rendition of Mozart's "Cosi fan Tutte."

In addition to all of the above, a couple of French operatic works may also be heard on Saturday. Charles Lecocq's "La Fille de Madame Angot" comes to us in a performance from Lausanne that was taped on November 11. If you've never heard anything by Lecocq, just think "Offenbach" & you won't be far off the mark. That's on Radio 4 (Netherlands).

Then, on French Radio, there's Poulenc's "Les Mamelles de Tiresias" (Lyons 1/7/11), the title of which can be translated as "The Breasts of Tiresias." Hmmm. . .

Any of these should help take our minds off THE SNOW!!!

OPERA ON THE INTERNET WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO

This Saturday, January 15, opera on internet radio is dominated by the Met broadcast at 1 o'clock of Verdi's "La Traviata." Marina Poplavskaya (seen recently as Elisabeth in Verdi's "Don Carlo") sings the role of Violetta, opposite Matthew Polenzani's Alfredo. You may remember him as Anna Netrebko's love interest in the recent HD-transmission of Donizetti's "Don Pasquale." Too bad this isn't being shown in area theatres -- but you can't have them every week, I suppose. (Too bad!)

Other than the Met broadcast, French Radio is airing a rare performance of Lully's 1679 opera "Bellerophon" from Versailles, the performance itself dating from 12/17/10.

Written over a century later, Martin y Soler's 1787 opera "L'Abore di Diana" can be heard on Swedish Radio, brought to us by the Teatro Real in Madrid in a performance from last March.

OPERA IN CINEMA
Just in case you're not aware of it, the Jane Pickens Theatre in Newport has a few operas lined up for the next few months:

This Sunday (Jan. 9) at 1 p.m., there's Verdi's "La Traviata" from London's Royal Opera House, starring Renee Fleming. I believe this is soon-to-be-released on DVD, i.e. not LIVE on Jan. 9.

Others include:

Thursday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. - Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana" & Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci" - LIVE from La Scala

Sunday, March 13, at 1 p.m. - Verdi's "Rigoletto" - (not LIVE -???) from Mantua, & starring Placido Domingo

Thursday, March 24, at 2 p.m. - Mozart's "Magic Flute" - LIVE from La Scala

Monday, June 13 - Verdi's "Macbeth" - LIVE from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, & starring Simon Keenlyside

These, of course, are in addition to the Met's live series of HD-transmissions. This Saturday at 1 p.m.: Puccini's "Fanciulla del West"

OPERA ON THE INTERNET WITH
DAVE D'AGUANNO

This Saturday (Jan. 8), most radio stations on the internet will be airing the Met broadcast of Puccini's "Fanciulla del West" which is simultaneously being transmitted LIVE in certain area movie theatres.

Aside from that, there isn't much else, with the BBC delivering an archival performance of Mozart's "Cosi fan Tutte" (with Kiri Te Kanawa) & a few other stations "playing catch-up" (so to speak) by running broadcasts of a couple of Met performances from this season that have already been heard, such as December's "Don Carlo" by Verdi & last week's "Pelleas & Melisande" by Debussy -- both certainly worth a second hearing, at any rate!

Then on Monday, January 10, at 8 p.m. the Met is offering another of their free LIVE audio streams: This time it's Puccini's "Tosca" with Sondra Radvanovsky in the title role.
Point of interest: Ms Radvanovsky is currently scheduled to appear as Leonora in the Met's upcoming HD-transmission of Verdi's "Trovatore" later this season.

Enjoy!
